Our 7th Sierra Leone Marathon!

-     Our 7th Sierra Leone Marathon raised an amazing £150,000!

-     Usman Charlie crowned winner of the full marathon for the second year in a row!

On Sunday 27th May, 97 international runners were joined by over 650 locals as they took on our 7th Sierra Leone Marathon in 97% humidity and 30 degree heat.

As runners lined up at the start line, Street Child of Sierra Leone country director Kelfa Kargbo made a passionate speech, reminding runners what the Sierra Leone Marathon is all about:

“We are not running to break world records, we are running for children’s education.”

This year’s 97 runners who travelled with us to Sierra Leone have raised over £150,000 in support of our work to help some of the world’s most vulnerable children to go to school. During the week they had a chance to see the impact of their fundraising first-hand as they visited remote rural schools and met mothers who had set up family businesses with Street Child’s support.

On race day, they made their way through villages and the beautiful landscapes of Makeni and were cheered along the way by enthusiastic local children and Street Child patron Nick Hewer who joined us for the marathon for the first time!

First across the line was Usman Charlie in just 2 hours 39 mins – retaining his winning title from 2017, followed shortly after by the first Brit to cross the line - Michael Bryant - in an impressive 3hrs.

Amongst the team of 97 international runners who travelled to Sierra Leone with Street Child, special congratulations go to Jessica Cosson and Matthew Geleta as fastest female and male respectively and the team from Tokio Marine Kiln who as a team of six raised over £20,000!

Street Child would like to say a massive thank you and congratulations to everyone that competed in this year's marathon. To those that have taken on this challenge and raised money to support the children, families and communities that you visited ahead of the race, we are incredibly grateful for all that you've done - and continue to do - to support our work. We look forward to seeing you soon... and to welcoming you back next year!

A special mention and thanks to these companies who supported the 2018 Sierra Leone Marathon: Coca-Cola, Flash Vehicles, Heineken, G4S, GT Bank and Nak’d.
