Thank you to our Fundraising Heroes!
On 28th May 2017 over 160 international runners travelled to Makeni, Sierra Leone for our sixth Sierra Leone Marathon. This year’s marathon was our biggest and best yet as more international runners joined us in Sierra Leone to help change the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable children.
At Street Child we couldn’t do what we do without the incredible efforts of our supporters. Our marathon awards are just one of the ways we like to say thank you to our supporters for doing something amazing. In recognition of the efforts of our 2017 runners, awards for fundraising hero, top individual fundraiser, top fundraising team and the spirit of the marathon award were given out at Street Child’s London event on 28th September.
The Sierra Leone Marathon Top Individual Fundraiser this year goes to the inspiring Pauline Cafferkey who raised over £5000. Pauline Cafferkey returned to Sierra Leone this year to support the thousands of vulnerable children impacted by Ebola. This was her first visit back to the country after contracting Ebola in 2015 and she bravely took on the 10k claiming:
"Running 10k might not be much for most, but for me it was a real challenge - and a challenge I’m very willing to take on if it means Ebola’s orphans get the help they so urgently need and deserve."
This year’s Top Fundraising Team were the amazing Sierra Long – together this team of 9 raised an incredible £30,000 for Street Child’s work in Sierra Leone.
This year’s fundraising hero was Nina Fitton who raised an incredible £3,077. Not only was this Nina’s second Sierra Leone Marathon but she also went above and beyond in her fundraising and raising awareness for the marathon.
And our final award of the night went to the amazing Rob Morley who won the ‘Spirit of the Marathon’ award. Rob inspired a team of 20 runners to join him for this year’s Sierra Leone Marathon and together they have raised over £20,000 for Street Child’s projects.
When we asked Rob about winning the award he said:
''The whole team absolutely loved the experience of the Sierra Leone Marathon and I would emphatically encourage anyone who is looking for an adventurous, fun, hugely rewarding and in many cases life-changing experience to sign-up to the 2018 event. You will not regret it!!"
Thank you again to all those who came, fundraised and supported the Sierra Leone Marathon 2017. We hope to see you back again for next year!
