About Street Child.
Who We Are:
At Street Child, we believe that achieving universal basic education is the single greatest step that can be taken towards the elimination of global poverty. 121 million school-aged children are currently out of education world-wide. Millions more children are in school but failing to learn.
Our focus is on low-cost sustainable solutions that make a real difference to the children we support. Since 2008, we have helped over 250,000 children to go to school and learn and supported over 15,000 families to set up businesses so they can afford the cost of educating their children long-term.
During your time in Sierra Leone, we take the time to show you as many Street Child projects as possible. You’ll see first hand the schools, children and families that you are supporting during this trip, and how your fundraising will make a difference to the lives of vulnerable children.
What We Do:
We recognise that the barriers to education are complex and interlinked, and our projects focus on a combination of education, child protection and livelihood support to address the social, economic and structural issues that underpin today’s education crisis.
Wherever we work, we partner with local organisations and communities and take an outcome-led approach. We use evidence to drive learning and the constant refinement and scale-up of programmes that create maximum impact for the most children at the lowest cost.
Our Work in Sierra Leone.
We began working in Sierra Leone in 2008. At that time, it was the poorest nation in the world and had been devastated by a decade of civil war.
Poverty, a lack of schools, losing one or both parents, or simply being a girl keeps thousands of children out of education in Sierra Leone. In fact, over half of children in Sierra Leone don't attend secondary school.
By providing a combination of psycho-social support, quality education and family business support, we give children the chance to live in a secure home with a family and to access the education they need for a brighter future.
